Chapter 11

Since I was still stuck within the coffin, my guardians gathered around me, the same as they often did, and those that could sit on my coffin did.

“Well, well, well,” Lutin began, flapping his wings as wide as he could so that he could get everyone’s attention. “You explained everything already, yes, Aory? What do we need to talk about now?”

“The brunt of our conversation needs to be the fact that the fairest wasn’t able to open the coffin, after all, and we’re going to need to find another way to free the princess,” said Aory. “And, I’m sure the fairest has more questions for you. I didn’t answer all of his questions, after all. Furthermore, I’m sure all of you would like to hear what the princess has to say. She was never able to explain how she got into this box, after all, and I’m sure that’s fascinating.”

I swallowed, my mouth suddenly dry.

“She was able to hear us most of the time, until the faireth, however,” Aory concluded. “So there isn’t a lot that we need to explain to her.”

“Good enough, though I would have expected you to prioritize answering her questions,” said Lutin. “Very well. Well, princess, how did the magician put you into this coffin, and did he tell you anything about how you’re supposed to be free of it?”

I squeezed my eyes shut. This was a more direct question than Aory had asked earlier, and I didn’t like it.

“It was the magician, yes. I … I was tricked. My stepmother found me, and she tried to kill me. And you have to understand, I didn’t realize it was her, because she’d somehow disguised herself as an old woman – it was probably the magician’s magic, now that I think about it. She acted like she’d been hurt, so I was trying to help her, and let her into the cave. Then she said she wanted to repay me for my goodness and pulled out an apple. I found it a little strange that she insisted I take a bite of the apple then and there, and she wouldn’t take no for an answer. I finally took a bite, just to quiet her, and next thing I knew I was here.” I swallowed, hard. “She was gone, but the magician was here in her place, and he’s the one who explained that the old woman had been my stepmother. He said that my stepmother thought she killed me – and I can only assume that she still believes that – but he had a different plan. I’m trapped in this coffin until I agree to marry him.”

My audience gave various noises of shock and indignation, though since my eyes were still shut, I had no way of knowing whose reaction was whose.

I was just alone, in the coffin, as everyone watched me. And this was, perhaps, the worst part of the coffin. The fact that no one could even offer me physical touch for comfort. Even placed on a pedestal for my protection as a princess had not been this bad.
